Do we make our stand in faith a New Year’s Resolution?

As the end of 2011 approaches and the new year waits to be greated, the people of the world are preparing their New Year’s Resolutions, and each one hopes that because it’s a new year, they will be commited and succeed. But as Christians, should we also wait and make our stand in faith a New Year’s resolution?

New Year’s resolutions are a worldly tradition and often don’t carry any kind of serious commitment. Why? Because if the people making the resolutions were serious they would be comitted to getting an answer now, and would not put them off until a notorious date that came with public acceptance and recognition.

If we wait until New Year’s Eve to make the commitment to stand in faith, then we are not commited in our hearts today to take that stand, and so putting it off simply delays our healing and possibly even our ability to stand in faith at all.

The Bible says in Psalms 118:24,This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” The Lord doesn’t say that He’s made “tomorrow” or “New Year’s Eve”, but rather, that He’s made today and that we should rejoice in Him today. We should give our issues to Him today and rejoice in His healing today.

Our determination to stand in faith is a commitment we make to God and not to the world. It comes from our heart and it’s our ability to trust Him for the answer regardless of what day of the year it is. It has nothing to do with the timing of any particular worldly celebration but rather, it’s our timing and it happens when we are ready in our hearts to trust the Lord.

When Moses was speaking to the people in Exodus 14:13, he said, Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today.” He didn’t tell them to put it off until New Year’s Eve.

Hebrews 3:7 says, “….today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…..” And we harden our hearts when we put off our stand in faith until a time that is convenient to the world – and yet, the world does not know Him. So why are we joining with their commitment of yearly resolutions when we are commited to Him today?

The rich man in the New Testament put off helping others with the assumption that he could do it tomorrow at his own  convenience, but sadly for him, the Lord called him that night and he never got to fulfill his own plans. We must be careful not to put off until tomorrow that which we know must be done today.

We take our stand in faith today and we stand until the Lord tells us that it’s finished. We don’t want to lose our hope and our faith and our trust in God by waiting for the world’s appointed day and making it a public commitment. We take our stand in faith today and make it a personal commitment to the Lord – and then we remain standing.

We are responsible to act on what we know, and when we realize that God can and will heal us today, then this is the time that we begin our stand in faith and we do not put it off.

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God .. .” Proverbs 3:3,4

  1. I totally agree with you Ronnie~!
Let us decide TODAY whom we serve and commit to rooting deeper into HIM daily, enlarging the place of His dwelling in us so that we may reflect JESUS to the lost and hurting world around us.
