The Night Before Christmas
It was the night before Christmas and all through the house
every creature was praising, even the mouse.
The Bibles were open to the pages with care,
which showed us so clearly, Jesus was near.
The children were singing and clapping their hands
with visions of a baby being born in the land.
Mamma, with her bonnet, and me, with my cap,
were in the mood for praising, not a long winter’s nap.
Then out on the lawn, there arose such a ringing,
and through the window, we saw carolers singing!
As we opened the door, our eyes were bestowed
with falling white flakes of Christmas snow.
The moon shone brightly on the singers around
as they sang in unison their glorious sound.
When what to my praising heart should I feel
but the presence of Jesus that was oh, so real!
The caroler’s voices sang out in accord,
and our hearts were delighted as we envisioned our Lord.
In the glory of Heaven, His presence came
with the angels about Him who praised His name!
“Wonderful, Counsellor and Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Savior, and Lord!
Prince of Peace, Healer, and Son of God,
Creator, Advisor, and King of the world!”
Suddenly, the stress of the world fell away
and I was filled with the hope of that soon-coming day
When the trumpet will sound, and my Jesus, I’ll see
as He calls us to come, and forever we’ll be.
This poem is my version of the original prose, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” acclaimed to have been written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1837. I take no credit for the style nor for the words that have been versed to give God the glory for His amazing gift of Jesus. His Son was born among us, died to take our sins away, and was raised from the grave to give us the only way to get to Heaven and be with Him forever. All we have to do is reach out and accept His gift (John 3:16), and then we’ll want to join the carollers and sing His praises forever!
