As much as the Pharisees hated Jesus, they also feared His followers. So, they had the Romans post guards around the tomb just in case the disciples stole His body at night and said He had risen. But when the women went to the tomb the day after Sabbath to prepare His body for burial, they were shocked to see the stone had been rolled away and Jesus was gone!
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from Heaven, rolled back the stone, and sat on it. The guards were so afraid of His lightning-like appearance that they shook and became like dead men. Then the angel told the women not to be afraid, that Jesus had risen just as He said He would, and they should go and tell the disciples.
So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. But on their way, Jesus appeared to them. “Greetings,” He said. They came to him, clasped his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there, they will see me.” But when the women returned to the disciples, they did not believe them. And they didn’t believe Him when Jesus met up with two of them on the Road to Emaus. But when he went in to dine with them, He broke bread, and immediately their eyes were opened.
The eleven disciples, full of excitement and joy, went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go, and when they saw Him, they worshiped Him. Their hearts were filled with joy because Jesus WAS who He said He was; He had risen from the grave and was alive, just as He’d promised!
Jesus stayed on earth for 40 days, appearing to many who loved Him. When He gathered with the twelve on His last day, as they were talking, the clouds opened up, angels came down, surrounded Jesus, and took Him to Heaven. Suddenly, two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into Heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into Heaven.”
What a promise! Jesus is alive and He’s coming back soon to get us, and we’ll all be with Jesus forever!
And all God’s people say, “Praise the Lord!” and “Amen!”
