Sheep rely totally on their shepherd. Always at peace, they trust him completely to lead them through every situation, day and night, and never question or doubt his love or ability to care for them. As Christians, Jesus is OUR Shepherd, and we need to trust Him in the same way and not be afraid, especially when our path seems scary. Shepherds are willing to die for their sheep, and since Jesus has already died and raised from the dead to save us, we can have His peace when we trust Him to lead us along the path of life.
