Jesus gathered with His disciples in an upper room to celebrate the Passover, when the angel of death passed over the homes of those who had obediently sprinkled the blood of a lamb over their doorposts. Jesus took the bread, blessed it, and shared it, saying it was symbolic of His body that would soon be broken for them. Then He poured the wine, saying it was the blood of the New Covenant that He was about to shed for them. This last supper was significant for Jesus and His disciples, with the exception of Judas of Iscariot. The agenda of this disciple was not about salvation but reward, and knowing that Jesus would conclude the event with prayer in a garden, he slipped away to commit the unthinkable.
