Many years ago, Jesus set aside His throne in Heaven to become a man and take on the punishment for our sins. After Judas betrayed Him, Jesus was apprehended by the soldiers, given a short mock trial, and then sentenced to die. The soldiers slammed a despicable crown of thorns on Jesus’ head, ripping His skull so great drops of blood poured down His face through the intense pain. They mocked Him for being King of the Jews and beat Him with their fists, scarring His body with immense bruises and deforming His face beyond recognition. They flogged Him 39 times with a shard-filled whip, spat on Him, kicked Him, and publically humiliated Him by nailing Him to a Roman cross.
Most of His followers were surprised by His death, but this day had been prophesied throughout the Old Testament. God wants us to know that, though we all deserve to be punished for our sins, His love for us is so great that Jesus was WILLING to take on the torturous punishment on our behalf to free us from sin and death and return us to God. There is no greater love than this than to lay down one’s life for His friends (John 15:13). And today, we look to Jesus, our Lord and our Savior, and say, “Thank you!”
