The Countdown: Day 3

Jesus spent the evening in the upper room with His disciples as they celebrated the Passover together. This was when Jesus exposed Judas, the one who would betray Him. It’s also when He shared the last communion with them and explained the bread referred to His body that would be broken for them, and the wine represented His blood that would be shed for them.

After the meal, Jesus left the upper room with His disciples and went to the Mount of Olives, where He told them He would die that night but rise on the third day. Peter insisted that he would protect Jesus, but the Lord said he would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed twice that night.

Most of the disciples stayed on the mount while Peter, John, and James went with Jesus to the garden of Gethsemane to watch for visitors while He prayed. Jesus prayed thrice, and the three disciples fell asleep each time. Finally, Jesus woke them and said, “Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.” And while He was still speaking, Judas came with the chief priests and elders and a great multitude carrying swords and clubs. Many couldn’t recognize Jesus in the dark, so Judas told them that the One he kissed would be Jesus.

They grabbed Jesus and led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and elders were assembled. They’d gathered many witnesses to speak lies against Jesus, but at the last minute, they ran away. Finally, two false witnesses came forth, and the religious leaders pushed to have Jesus killed. As they led Jesus through the court, the rooster crowed, and Jesus’s eyes and Peter’s eyes met, and Peter was torn inside and ran into the darkness and wept. He had betrayed the One he loved, and now Jesus was about to be killed.
