Jesus stood on the hillside of the Mount of Olives overlooking the city of Jerusalem with His disciples. They pointed at the many notable buildings in the city below, but to their surprise, Jesus said that not one stone would be left upon another as they would all be torn down.
The disciples had learned a lot from Jesus in the three and a half years they were with Him and believed that Jesus was the king who would end this world’s system and free them of the rule of the Roman Empire. So, they asked Jesus when the end would be and the signs of His return.
Jesus told them that it would be when many would be deceived by false teachers and when global and civil wars would happen simultaneously as global famines, pestilences, and earthquakes—but that these were all the beginning of sorrows.
He warned them that Christians would be persecuted and killed, hated by all nations and even friends, that false prophets would rise up and deceive many, and that lawlessness would abound, causing the love of many to grow cold. He spoke of the horrors they’ll experience in the Great Tribulation and how they’ll see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ the antichrist spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place. He told them how He would return after the Tribulation and gather His elect worldwide. But as the disciples looked on anxiously, Jesus reminded them that the signs will give us a general idea of when He will return, but that no one knows the day or the hour—so be ready.
We live in the days forewarned, and all the signs Jesus gave are increasing intensity and coming to pass globally right before our eyes. Jesus knew He was about to be killed, yet He took the time to warn us of what to expect in the last days—but not without giving us the promise that He would return for His bride before the Tribulation began.
