The Sponge

live spongeThe world is watching us with beady eyes. It might even know our walk with God better than we do, especially if we don’t practice what we preach. It can spot hypocrisy a mile away and knows the ones who are true from those who just want to sit on the fence and reap the rewards from both sides. When we don’t live what we preach every day, the world soon learns that we have nothing to offer because we are as parched as they are in our heart, just like a dry sponge.

We need to be soaked in God’s love and filled with His Word so we can spread His gospel everywhere we go. And we need to study the Scriptures and spend time with God so that we never dry out! This is not a Sunday agenda; this is an everyday lifestyle! All of our thoughts, works, words, and actions should define us as Believers and followers of Christ Jesus every day, and the world should know who we are.

  • Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.—Matthew 5:16

Many Christians attend church and even partake in the service but don’t soak up the life of the message. They hear it and it sounds good, but they don’t receive it into their heart and it soon fades away. Their heart is not set on Jesus but instead, on a religious commitment. They attend church devotedly and tithe faithfully to ensure their seat in Heaven, but they don’t absorb the truth into their heart so that it becomes part of them because they have no desire to know Jesus.

  • And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. —Mark 4:5-6

As Believers, we need to be so full of God that it leaks out everywhere we go, just like a wet sponge. We need to be filled with the truth and ready to wipe up the spills of hurt, pain, suffering, lack, and loneliness all around us. We need to be a refreshing help to those in need so we can lead the lost to Jesus!

All Scripture

Let’s fill up with the Scriptures so we can expound His love and hope everywhere we go and be God’s useful vessel in this corrupt world. People are looking for God, whether they realize it or not, even though they search in all the wrong places. They want to find true love and joy and peace, and we can help them find it by always being ready and willing to share the gospel with them.

  • The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.—Proverbs 20:27

Some people will listen intently and will repent of their sins and choose to follow Jesus right away; others see it as a great idea but soon go back to their old ways; and others will blatantly refuse our message. We don’t judge them and we don’t condemn them because they don’t want to know Jesus; we love them anyway. The world is coming to an end of its evil course and the god of this world knows it. He is doing everything in his power to keep people blinded from the truth so they won’t know Jesus, and so as we try to spread the truth, he’ll try to destroy our testimony.

But we don’t give up because not everyone accepted Jesus when He came to earth; in fact, most people rejected Him. Jesus continued with His mission anyway, and He went to that cross for everyone’s sin—anyway. So, we must not give up, either. We must share His salvation message and if they don’t want to hear it, then we need to ask God to send other laborers across their path, and to open their ears and eyes and heart so that they can receive the truth when it comes to them again. We need to be as stubborn for their salvation as they are for rejecting it. And we must always remember that if they won’t hear what we have to say, it’s not “us” they are rejecting; it’s Jesus.

He was in the world

  • Jesus said, “He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”—Luke 10:16

Sponges come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors, and are designed for different kinds and sizes of jobs. It’s the same for Believers. Some of us may have massive assignments like Billy Graham to preach to the world, while most of us have smaller tasks where our mission field is our families, friends, communities, and workplaces. Yet, we all need to be filled with God’s wisdom and knowledge and instruction from the Scriptures so we can overflow in His love and do the job He has given us to do.

Let’s be a sponge for Christ regardless of the size of the job, and let’s soak up His truth and His love so we are always ready to do the job that He’s called us to do. When we become dry inside, we lose the incentive to follow Jesus and do His will, and the god of this world gladly fills that void with deception so that our only desire is to please ourselves. He will hide from us that a dry, warn out sponge is good for nothing.

Jesus is returning soon to collect all His saints, so let’s stay filled with His life and His purpose, always doing His will as we wait for His call! What a thrill it will be when Jesus tells us, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)
