Many people today say that they aren’t a slave to anyone; they are their own master, in control of their own life and don’t answer to anyone. But the truth is, we are all a creation of God and have been corrupt with sin, and so contrary to what modern society thinks, we do serve one of two masters!
Adam and Eve were God’s children and He walked with them daily in the Garden of Eden. He was their Father and they were His children. They were filled with His Spirit and they answered to Him for everything…..until…..Eve was deceived and convinced Adam to disobey God. That is when the second master, the devil, appeared on the scene. He came at them through the serpent and was able to show himself as being greater than God to them, and so they “chose” to disobey God and follow him. When they did, God withdrew His Spirit from them as they were no longer pure, but filled with sin.
Every child born since that dreadful day has been born in sin. The faithful people of the Old Testament followed God out of love and obedience, and gave their offerings to God as an atonement in reference to Christ who was to come. We who were born after Christ came and have accepted Him as our Messiah have His Holy Spirit in us. Very soon, Jesus is going to call the dead in Christ to rise from their graves and join Him in the clouds along with us who are alive and love Jesus. God is faithful to all those who receive Jesus as their Messiah. But He’s coming soon and we need to know who we serve!
- You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind.—Luke 10:27
Unfortunately, many Christians feel that they can enjoy the best of both worlds. They go to church on Sunday’s and yet, break one or more of the Ten Commandments and because of deception, think it’s okay, that God forgives and accepts whatever they do. God said we cannot serve two masters! If we think we can, we are walking a very dangerous line.
- No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.—Matthew 6:24
Life is filled with choices: what to wear, what to eat, what to do. But the most significant choice that any of us will ever make in our life is the one where we choose to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He is the promised Messiah who was born in that manger many years ago, and who died on that cross and paid the punishment for our sins so that we could be redeemed back to God, our Father. Jesus “chose” to leave Heaven so He could come to earth and die for us!
Regardless of what we do or think, there are only two masters and we must “choose” which one we will serve! The devil will make people happy and prosperous just to keep them from knowing God. His reign on this earth is evil and temporal, and it’s coming to an end. Sadly, all those who follow him, who don’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, will suffer the same end with him.
- …choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…—Joshua 24:15
God loves us! He wants us to be with Him forever, and this citizenship into His Kingdom begins at the cross and never ends. We need to realize that we are sinners and that we need a Savior. We need to turn from the world, accept that Jesus is the Son of God and is that Savior. He will take our sins away, fill us with His Spirit, and bring us to God.
No one is automatically saved. We each have to choose to receive Jesus so we can be born again into God’s Kingdom. Life won’t be perfect while we’re on earth because now we’ll have an angry devil to contend with. But God is greater than anything the devil can throw at us, so we need to fill our heart and our mind with God’s Words so that we can resist the wiles of the devil and get the victory. We need to put on the whole armor of God every day so that we can go forth, share the truth with others and help them to make a choice to receive Jesus. The battles may be challenging, but so rewarding when we can bring even one person back to God!
People are stubborn and many won’t want to change, but that is their choice. One day they’ll stand before Christ and regret their foolishness, but it will be too late then to change masters. The time to choose is now. We need to continue going forth in God’s truth, sharing His love and gospel with everyone while there is still time—because the time of grace is about to end!
