If we knew that today was the last day we would be alive, most of us would make some big changes before the day ended. Some would live it up and party to “go out with a bang”, but many more would want to make it right with God. Even though they never really took Jesus seriously before and had no desire to be “religious”, now they’d feel that they better do it or end up in a place they don’t want to be. The lives of many people would change if they really knew that there was no tomorrow.
But, there is no guarantee for anyone that there is a tomorrow. King David tells us in Psalm 118:24 that “this is the day the Lord has made.” This day! Today! It’s all we have. Too many of us put things off for another day that should be done today. We have become careless about time, when in fact, we should be aware that time plays a significant role in our lives.
In Ecclesiastes 3, King Solomon tells us about the importance of time, and how there is a time for everything. These aren’t our select times—not always times that we choose, but he stresses that things will happen to us in our life when we need to inadvertently adhere to the circumstances, and what emotion we will pour out. But he doesn’t tell us how long we have to live. We do know, however, that we will die at some point, because Hebrews 9:27 says that will all die once.
Many live carelessly thinking they’ll live to be old. However, today’s obituaries are filled with young men and women who have died; many unexpectedly and many from illness. And sadly, if they took the attitude that salvation can wait until they got old, then they missed it and their eternity will be horrendous.
- Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.—2 Corinthians 6:2
People are deceived and put off knowing God because they think that the devil will somehow give up and let them go before they die so they can make it right with God. But the devil will not let you go because he has come to steal, kill and destroy you! And if he even suspects that in your foolish concept for waiting, you’ll remember to repent in your last hours of life, you can bet that he’ll do everything possible to arrange for you to die at a time you’re not expecting.
People put off their salvation because they don’t know God and think that making things “right” with Him in the end is just the ticket they need to get into Heaven. They have no idea what it means to be a Christian, that when they receive Jesus as their Savior their sins are forgiven and they become citizens in God’s kingdom. They don’t understand that Jesus will be their friend, that the Holy Spirit of God will live in them so that they’ll be able to read the Bible and get God’s divine interpretation, or that they’ll be able to have a father-child relationship with God, or that He will lead them and guide them through life. They don’t realize that they will become the temple of the Holy Spirit so that they will be able to go forth and share the love of God with others and lead them into His kingdom.
Becoming a Christian is far more than just getting into Heaven when you die. It’s knowing and loving God with your whole heart, mind and soul now while you’re alive on this earth. It’s being separated from this world and living for God every day. You can’t do this when it’s literally the last-minute choice before death. You’ll still get into Heaven but you will have missed out on a lifetime of living with Jesus and doing things for His glory.
We are living in the last hour before Jesus calls us home in what we refer to as the rapture. Jesus is going to come down to the clouds and call us up to join Him. Who is “us”? It’s all those people who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior and who are filled with the Spirit of God. In 1 Thessalonians 4:17 we read that God will take His Holy Spirit out of this world, and we who have His Spirit in us will go with Him. Our bodies will be transformed and we’ll rise to meet Jesus in the clouds to be with Him forevermore. Then God will pour His judgment out onto this sinful world—and you do NOT want to be here then!
We don’t know when that will be, but we do know that it will be soon because we are literally living in the time of the signs that Jesus warned us about, and that the Old Testament prophets told us about. Jesus is getting ready to call us Home because He wants us out of the way before He pours judgment on the world in a time known as Jacob’s Trouble, or The Great Tribulation. We have no idea when this will happen—we just know that it’s coming soon!
It will be too late then to escape the terror that will come! This world will experience horrors that even Hollywood hasn’t imagined, and yes, there will be some people who get saved during this time, but they’ll have to die a horrendous death to get to Heaven.
For those of us who know and love Jesus, we need to get out there and warn everyone around us NOW! We need to share God’s love and the gospel of Christ with our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, and with everyone we meet. Time is running out! If we know someone who is being foolish and putting off salvation until that unforeseen tomorrow, then we need to pray for them and show them that salvation is for today, that Jesus wants them to live under His care now! Let’s work with God and help as many people as possible find Jesus today, while there is still time! Let’s not leave them in the illusion that it’s for another day because for many, there will be no tomorrow.
- For man also does not know his time: Like fish taken in a cruel net, Like birds caught in a snare, So the sons of men are snared in an evil time, When it falls suddenly upon them.—Ecclesiastes 9:12
