We are now entering that time of year when all the Christmas decorations are coming to life inside our homes, and definitely in the big stores. It’s such a wonderful feeling to hear the happy Christmas songs and to see the vibrant colors on display as it welcomes us into the most joyful season of all. But there is so much more to the holiday season than just that warm feeling of Christmas.
As Christians, our focus should be on Jesus! His birth was miraculous; His love was infinite; and His purpose was eternal. The night He was born was glorious, and the angels were gathered around to celebrate! They knew who Jesus was, and they were there to worship Him.
God has always loved us, even though there were times when He was totally angered by the human desire to live in and enjoy sin rather than love Him, the One who created them. But when God made us, He gave us a soul and a heart that was one with His. Unfortunately, when sin entered Adam and Eve, God’s Spirit withdrew from them and they were left with a heart that could choose. And sadly, most of their descendants also have chosen sin over God.
The Old Testament is loaded with prophecies about the coming Messiah. God never forgot His children, and He planned so perfectly when Jesus, our Messiah would be born. The story of the birth of Jesus to a young virgin named Mary is the most amazing story ever written. But it’s not just a story; it’s a record of the truth. God would come to earth and dwell in the body of a man, a perfect man just as Adam was perfect before he sinned. But unlike Adam, Jesus kept His heart One with God’s!
Jesus chose to fulfill what God had prepared Him to do, and God’s Spirit filled His body and Jesus became the Temple of God! He walked this earth with people for three and a half years. During that time, Jesus proved beyond a shadow of a doubt who He was—He was the Messiah who had come to take their sins away. Few people recognized Him, including His own earthly kin, but some did and they knew He was the Son of God.
- Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”—Matthew 16:16
As we celebrate this Christmas, let’s remember why we are celebrating! Let’s give all of our praise and our worship to God!
God fulfilled His promise to us and He provided the only means whereby we could be forgiven for our sins. This wasn’t easy, even for God because He had to watch His precious Son endure horrific treatment and then be barbarically nailed to a cross. And the pain that Jesus suffered was very real! But it was second to the pain that Jesus felt when God had to withdraw from Him so that He could take on our sins and die in our place, and then pay the punishment for them!
- So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”—Mathew 1:22-23
The night that Jesus was born was the most glorious night that this world has ever experienced. The Heavens rang out His glory. A Son was given. A child was born. God’s love for you and for me was genuine and it became a reality on that One Glorious Night!
- For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.—Isaiah 9:6
