Why Put on the Armor of God?

armour of GodSome Christians think that they get filled with the Word of God so they can have the power to yell and scream at the devil and win battles with him. Others feel that it’s so they can go forth and speak to everything in their path because they have the authority of God to do so. But is this what God told us to do? And if we don’t study so that we can fight the devil, then why do we need to put on the armor of God?

We put on the armor of God so that we can be strong and stand when the enemy attacks. Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:11 to put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. He doesn’t say so that we can go out and fight the devil, but rather so that we can be strong and stand when he attacks.

Jesus defeated the devil at the cross, and He has given us His Word to study so that we can get His truth deep into our heart. When we know Jesus and know the truth, then when the enemy attacks, we can stand strong and know that Jesus will fight this battle for us. We do not need to fight the battle ourselves.

The armor of God is given to us to cover us—in His righteousness! We do not have the ability to fight the devil on our own merits, and to think that we can come against him by shouting Scripture out to him is simply giving him more power. He knows the Scriptures, but unless WE know the Scriptures and the One who wrote them, they are just words.

  • For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.—Ephesians 6:12

We put on the armor of God to protect ourself from every way that the enemy will come after us. First of all, we get the truth into our heart so that we know that we know that these words are Gods words and that He said them and meant them and will fulfill them. Then, when things come against us, we can bring to mind God’s words and speak them out in faith, knowing that we are simply stating what God has said.

  • Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.—Ephesians 6:14a

studyWhen we know the Scriptures, they become part of us. We become less and Jesus becomes more as His righteousness covers us. Then when the enemy attacks, he sees Jesus in us and knows that he’s dealing with Jesus and not with us.

  • And having on the breastplate of righteousness.—Ephesians 6:14b

Every part of our lives should be a testimony of God’s love and mercy towards us, so that we can show mercy and kindness to everyone we meet, as well. Our job is to lead others to Jesus with His compassion. This should be the cry of our heart, to get people saved. Jesus said in Matthew 10:16, Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. In everything we do, we should do it with a peaceful approach. Regardless of what we come up against, doing it as peacefully as possible should be at the forefront of our minds.

  • Your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.—Ephesians 6:15

If we have received the salvation of Christ, then it’s crucial as believers that we study the Scriptures ourselves and get to know God on a very personal basis. It’s good to attend church and learn from the pastor, but the personal relationship with Jesus only comes with intimate prayer and worship and by studying the Bible. Then our faith is built up so that we believe without question what God has said. And then when the enemy attacks, we have that shield of faith to know what God has said about it.

  • Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.—Ephesians 6:16

truthWhen we are saved, we must never forget that Jesus is our Lord and that HE protects us. The helmet of salvation is our protection from the wiles of the devil. When we remember that we are saved and that Jesus is our Lord, and that as Lord, He will fight our battles for us, then we have the confidence to know that Jesus will fight even this battle. And we build up that confidence by speaking the Word of God. So when a situation arises that we know is not of God, we can confidently speak the Word and that alone is the power that reminds the devil God’s Words are true.

  • And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.—Ephesians 6:17

We need to follow Jesus and His example that He gave to us when He was on earth. We need to stand up for what’s right and speak against the things that are wrong, but we should try to always live as peaceably as possible with those we meet in life. The enemy is giving his best shot now to destroy God’s people in these last days, but we are God’s temple on this earth, and if God lives in us, then He will surely fight our battles for us.

  • If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.—Romans 12:18
