Often when people hear a Christian talking about the salvation of Jesus, an alarm goes off in their head. They either run and hide to avoid an encounter, or boldly speak against the “religion” of the Christian and declare that they have their own religion. So why do Christians continue to talk about Jesus anyway when so many don’t want to hear it?

First of all, those of us who love Jesus also love to share His salvation message with others. We don’t want to keep it hidden because we are proud of who we are and we don’t hesitate to show it. Jesus says in Matthew 10:33 that if we are ashamed of Him before men, then He will be ashamed of us before His Father.

• For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.—Romans 1:16

When we are not ashamed of who we are, then the light of Jesus will shine through us in everything we say and do. We aren’t perfect, and we will still do things wrong, but it’s how we handle those mistakes that becomes a witness to the world of who we really are. It’s how we deal with unkind situations in life that make us anxious or angry or hurt that tells the world that Christ lives in us.

• Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.—Matthew 5:16

Christians share the gospel for one reason!

Apostle Peter says it best in the latter part of Acts 15:7—”…that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.” A person can attend church and do good works, but until he or she gets the truth into their heart, they will never receive salvation. And many people of the world are very good Samaritans, but they don’t know Jesus.  And so, the purpose in our heart is to get them saved.

For anyone to get saved, they must have some faith in God to first believe that He is God, and then to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and then to realize that they are a sinner and need their sins taken away. And how will they even have those thoughts if they don’t hear the gospel? If they don’t hear us telling them about the saving grace of Christ? Thoughts of God and of Heaven may pop into their mind, but that’s as far as they will go because salvation is of the heart. It’s the heart that needs to receive from God, and since God is a Spirit,  we can only see Him through our spirit—not our mind.

• God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”—John 4:24

Good intentions and well-laid plans do not give you salvation. It takes a submissive heart that is willing to change and wanting to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. This is what leads to salvation. And that moment only comes when they have the faith to believe. So how do they get that gift of faith? God gives it to everyone whose heart is touched and wants to receive.

It happens when they hear the salvation message of Jesus and the words touch their heart! Suddenly, those words become hope and life, and their heart is actually tuned into Jesus. For those few seconds or minutes, they realize that they are a sinner and need their sins taken away so that they can be part of God’s Kingdom. This “chance” of hearing us tell them about Jesus is an opportunity given by God so they can get saved.

• Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”—Acts 2:38

When a Christian tells someone about Jesus, the Holy Spirit is present and He calls out to that person. They feel something in their heart, and that’s why it’s suddenly an issue for them to want to repent and receive Jesus. This is when God gives them the gift of faith to believe! They can’t believe with their mind; their heart is the only way to Jesus.

• For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,—Ephesians 2:8

They can either go with the feeling and answer the call or shrug it off. Some who shrug it off never get another chance to receive Jesus. They weren’t interested the first time and avoid being put in that situation again. And this is terrible! Others will get a second chance because even though they didn’t act on it when we told, their heart remains in a state of hope. They may finally receive Jesus when someone else tells them again, or it may come through an incident, or a song, or something they read. They get that sensation again with the desire to cry out to Jesus—and this is the Holy Spirit once again calling them.

Salvation only comes when the Holy Spirit calls! But people need to answer that call to be saved.

• For many are called, but few are chosen.”—Matthew 22:14

Receiving salvation is a spiritual calling and it doesn’t come often; in fact, it only happens a few times in a person’s life. This is their opportunity to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. They can’t do it through the mind; only through the heart, and only with the gift of faith to believe when God’s Spirit gives it.

This is why Christians talk about Jesus—to give people the opportunity to hear the message of salvation and to receive this gift of faith so they can be saved. Jesus said in 2 Peter 3:9 that He doesn’t want anyone to perish. John 3:16 says that Jesus died for every soul ever born, but that only those who would receive Him would be saved.

This world is temporal and we’re only passing through it. Eternity is forever, and we want our family and friends, neighbors and co-workers to be there with us. Like Jesus, we don’t want anyone to go to Hell because of their sins. Jesus is soon going to return as King and the opportunities to hear the truth and receive the gift of faith and get saved will be no more. Today is the day of salvation, and so today, we Christians will continue to tell others about Jesus!

• How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?—Romans 10:14
