Many Christians identify themselves as being “born-again” Christians. Perhaps it’s their way of separating themselves from specific denominations, or perhaps it’s a term they use to show others that they really are Christians. But the fact is that a person who is a Christian does not need to say they are born-again.
The changing point in any person’s life that makes that person a Christian is being born-again. Jesus said that we must be born-again. What does this mean? It means that a person realizes that he or she is a sinner and needs a Savior, so they turn from the ways of this world and from the god of this world and accept Jesus as their Savior. They ask Jesus to forgive them for their sins, and then they receive His forgiveness. Then, they invite Jesus in to be Lord over their lives and the Spirit of God comes in and lives with them forever. The old spirit that was in them—the spirit of the world—has been removed and God’s Spirit lives in them. They now belong to God because they have been born-again!
- Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.—2 Corinthians 5:17
Jesus is King, and when we accept Him as such, we become citizens of His Kingdom. We have been “born-again” into the Kingdom of God. There is only one way to receive this citizenship. It’s through the salvation of Jesus. Anyone can say they are a Christian, but if they are not born-again, they are not a Christian, and they do not belong to God’s Kingdom.
- And He said, “Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, ‘I am Christ’; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.”—Luke 21:8
It’s unfortunate that we have so many people all around us who call themselves Christians and then live like the devil when we aren’t around. Many attend churches that are filled with hype and that preach a message of prosperity instead of the gospel of Christ. Other churches are relaxed and convince the people that God has changed and accepts them just as they are, sin and all. And television has been a tremendous tool used to promote false doctrines and bring many into its fold.
People are hungry for God, but they are incredibly lazy. They don’t want to study the Bible themselves to know God or to know the truth about this world. So they rely on leaders to do all the work for them, which opens the doors to all all the deceivers who become rich through the offerings of the fools who think they are paying their way into Heaven.
- Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure..—Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV
And so we have a mirage of so-called Christians who claim to be God’s children. But they don’t even know God and still have the evil nature in them, which makes them deceivers and an offense to real Christians. And so as a result, many feel that they need to say they are born-again Christians, so that people will know they are real. But as Christians, we are not in competition with the false ones who just call themselves Christians. The world will know who we are!
The Bible says in Galatians 5:19-25 that Christians are known by the fruits of the Spirit that lives in them, just as the people of the world are known by their fruits. As Christians, we don’t need to prove to anyone who we are by saying we are born-again because God in us is revealed in everything we say and do. And this is our witness to the world—God lives in us. And the world will see Him through us.
We don’t need to say that we are born-again. We are Christians because we ARE born-again. This is what makes us Christians, and it’s what separates us from everyone else, including those who say they are but really aren’t. It’s a fact that comes out in our character because of our heart.
Christians are the real believers of Christ; we are citizens of His Kingdom. We need to stand proud when we say we are Christians, and not feel that we have to describe ourselves so people will know what kind of Christian we are. There is only one kind—born-again. We answer to God. He sees our heart, and He knows we are His, and that is all that matters. The devil has been an impersonator from the beginning, and now he has many followers. But we follow Christ and our heart, displayed through our character, will be all we need to identify ourselves as His.
- My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.—John 10:27-28
