One Glorious Night

One Glorious NightWe are coming into the Christmas season, and many of us are already in the Christmas Spirit. We’ve started shopping for gifts, and we’ve replaced our home atmosphere from autumn to the holiday décor. While the world has its own reasons for celebrating Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus that happened on that One Glorious Night!

Yet, there are many Christians who still don’t have the full understanding of what happened that night, or why it was such a miraculous event. We all agree that Mary delivered a child and that she was still a virgin at the time, and that in itself is a miracle. But what’s even more miraculous is the fact that this baby is no ordinary baby; this baby is God’s Son who came from Heaven to live on earth!

For us to fully grasp the wonder of Jesus’s birth, we need to step back into the Old Testament and learn why Jesus had to come to earth in the first place. We need to realize that we are all sinners in need of a Savior. And we need to know the history that leads up to the events of Jesus’s birth so we can appreciate why it is so miraculous! This glorious night is what the Old Testament prophets talked about, and it’s what the faithful men and women of God lived for. They knew that a Savior would come one day who would redeem them back to God, and so they waited and hoped for the promised Messiah.

i-will-beThis promise of salvation was originally given to Abraham. His son Isaac had a son named Jacob, and Jacob’s 12 sons began the nation of Israel. These were God’s chosen people—His children—because they alone loved Him and followed His ways. But this promise now includes every person who accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

By one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.—1 Corinthians 12:13

The gift of salvation that Jesus freely gave to everyone when He died on the cross is not a gift that we can assume. It’s very personal, and it’s one that we have to reach out and take. We accept it and when we do, we are no longer defined as being either Jew or Gentile—we are now one nation now made up of Jews and Gentiles. So, every person who accepts the salvation of Jesus is part of this new nation, God’s kingdom.

631115301_0d78360698Jesus talked about this new kingdom often during His earthly ministry. It’s a kingdom made up of all those who accept Him as their Lord and Savior. He tells us to seek this kingdom first—to come out of the kingdom of this world and make Jesus our Lord and Savior, who is King over this kingdom—and then we will be blessed.

  • But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.—Matthew 6:33

Jesus truly is the reason for the Christmas season! The world may see Christmas as a time to party, and a time to decorate with Santa Claus and toys and Christmas trees, but as Christians, we see it as a time to celebrate our salvation! We want to worship God because He kept His promise and He redeemed us back to Himself through the shed blood of Jesus—and this is the same Jesus whose miraculous birth we celebrate on Christmas Eve.
