A Fearful Heart

Fearful heart2The Bible tells us in Psalms 111:10 and in Proverbs 9:10 that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. Many people who do not understand Scripture—and this includes non-Christians AND Christians—think that we must be afraid of God and do what He says or die! Others are afraid of people and live in fear of what they could do to them. We need to study the Bible and know God so we can know that He is greater than the people of this world and greater than the god they serve. Jehovah God gives peace to a fearful heart.

People don’t read their Bibles and don’t know the truth about God. Some think that He’ll strike them down and bring them great trials and tribulations in life if they don’t do everything He says. They read parts of the Bible using their own understanding or they listen to what others say who don’t know God, and they don’t commit to Him because they feel that He’s unfair and too harsh to be real. So they choose to stay in the world and assume that the real God up there somewhere will just welcome them home to Heaven when the time comes. Deception!

The devil is a deceiver and he works hard to keep people away from God and in his clutches. It’s the devil that brings disease and poverty and financial stress upon this world, and it’s the devil that lies and says God is to blame for our sorrows.  But we should not fear the devil; we should fear God because it’s God who will judge sin in the end, and it’s God who will determine our eternity, not the devil.

read BibleChristians are forgiven through the salvation of Christ, who died on the cross for their sins, but they are not perfect and they won’t be until they leave this earth and go to God. Salvation saves our soul, but it does not take away our will. We can choose to study the Bible, spend time in prayer and worship before the Lord and live for Christ—or not. It’s a choice that comes from the heart. God will not force us to choose, but He will do everything possible to get us to see the truth—because He loves us.

When we spend time with God we are not afraid. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. We are filled with peace and with joy and our hope in Him grows! We know that God IS the highest authority AND that He loves us! We are made strong because the joy we have in Him is our strength—(Nehemiah 8:10), and when we can realize this, then we have no fear of God.

  • You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.—Psalm 16:11

Without God there is no hope in life for anything and the future is eternity with the devil—(Matthew 25:41). The sin that is in every person will be judged by the law on the day that each one stands before Christ their King. And people can mock God and say this won’t happen, but that doesn’t change the fact that He IS the King and the Judge and the One who will determine their eternal future.  God will not be mocked!—(Galatians 6:7) This is what people should be afraid of.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom! When we realize who God is and who Jesus is and why Jesus came for us, we realize the horrific condition that our soul is in and we should be afraid! Sin belongs to the devil and the devil hates God and anyone who serves the devil cannot serve God—(Matthew 6:24). God will judge sin and if sin is found in you, then you will suffer the consequences of that sin.

I love themWhen we realize that we belong to this world and that we will be judged for our sins, we need to come to God and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He will remove our sins and remove the spirit of this world that lived in us, and He’ll give us His Spirit to live in us. Then we belong to Him! And when we stand before Him on Judgement Day, He will know that we belong to Him because He’ll see His Spirit in us in the place of sin. And, if we’ve committed sins since our salvation and not repented for them, we will be chastised for them if our heart is right before Him, and we’ll still be with Him throughout eternity because we belong to Him.

If a person doesn’t accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, then the sin of this world remains in their heart, and when they stand before Him on that day He will see sin instead of His Spirit. Sin will be judged and punished—and this is to be feared.

  • For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.—Romans 6:23

This is why those who don’t know God will tremble in fear when they stand before Him. God hates sin! He doesn’t want anyone to go to hell, but if they refuse the salvation that Jesus provided, then the sin in them will bring judgment upon them.

i-will-beGod is our Father, our Friend, our Creator, our Healer and our Deliverer. We aren’t afraid of God; we love Him and crave to be in His presence. We fear to be away from Him because to be with God is the safest place to be; He will never leave us. But to be with the devil is the most dangerous place to be—and to be feared!

Fear is the beginning of wisdom! We need to have a fearful heart towards God, knowing that what God said He will do is exactly what He will do. He has provided salvation for everyone and the time for repentance and forgiveness is now, before He returns as King. Choose wisely and be at peace with God.

  • These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.—John 16:33
