Often when Christians try to convert non-believers, they quote verses of Scripture hoping to prove that God is real and alive today. But sadly, to someone who doesn’t know God and who has never read the Bible and who attributes the sorrows and tribulations of this world to an uncaring Creator, the Bible has no value. So what good is the Bible if we can’t use it to witness to people?
The Bible is invaluable to a Christian, but we can’t wave it in the face of a non-believer and expect them to be convicted because it won’t happen! The Scriptures are just words to those who don’t know God. They only become revelation when the Holy Spirit brings the words to life. So if a person doesn’t know God, then they won’t have His Spirit in them and they won’t get the truth behind the words. As it says in 1 Corinthians 2:14, it is foolishness to them.
- But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.—John 14:26
The world is becoming a very dark place and people will only see God when they see the light that leads them to God. And we are that light! Our bodies are God’s temple because His Spirit lives in us. And so our lives are the greatest witness available of the goodness, power and love of God. And people of the world may have no interest in the Bible, but they can be drawn to the light that’s in us—and then we take them to the Scriptures.
- Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.—Matthew 5:16
When family and friends, co-workers and social acquaintances see how we handle situations and how we react to different circumstances, they begin to wonder why we’re like that. They begin to want that peace and joy that shines out from within us. This is our testimony!
And so we tell them about God’s love for us, and as we capture their interest more and more, we can bring out our Bibles and show them who Jesus is and what He did for us on the cross. They’ll see that our lives really do reflect the life of Christ, and they’ll want Him to be Lord over their lives, too, so they can be rid of their burdens and feel the peace and joy that lives in us.
- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.—John 3:16
This is when we give them a Bible and encourage them to read it. Many people have tried to read and understand the Bible on their own, but they come up with arguments and flaws with its truth. This is because people will never know the truth unless God’s Spirit reveals it to them. And He’ll only reveal it to hearts that want to know Him.
When we study the Scriptures, it’s like putting a puzzle together. Each revelation from God becomes a puzzle piece in the big picture, and when we get enough pieces together we begin to understand what the picture is. And the more pieces we add to the picture, the better understanding of God we have.
The Bible is absolutely necessary for us to know God, to know the history of God and of God’s people, and to know what lies ahead. It’s crucial that we study it and know it in our heart because when we do, we will do all we do to glorify God; we will live according to His law and we will show others the gospel so they, too, can become saved.
- Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.—2 Timothy 2:15
The new age religion teaches that we don’t need the Bible and that the spirit that is in us will teach us everything, but that is foolishness! If we don’t know God because we don’t read the Bible, it just may not be His Spirit that’s in us. When people first have that desire in their heart to want to know God, it’s because God has given them a gift of faith to want to find Him. But unless they study the Bible and know His will for their lives, His laws for their direction and His love for their hope, they will never know Him. But once they begin to know Him, their heart softens and they surrender to Christ; they accept His salvation and are saved, and God forgives their sins, removes the old nature and gives them a new spirit—His Spirit: they belong to Him!
Our lives are the testimony of God’s truth, the light that shows people the way to the cross. The Bible brings the truth of God to life so we can know Him. Through people like Joseph and Moses and David, we can feel the love that He has for His children. To the world, the Bible is just a book to be debated, but to a Christian, the Bible is the most cherished position on earth because God’s Spirit gives revelation that brings the words to life.
- All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.—2 Timothy 3:16
