There are many times in our lives when people really make us angry and we just want to shout out at them and get them to smarten up. But we’re not always in control of the situation and sometimes we’re not able to talk to them and so the anger bottles up inside us and we feel as if we will explode. Night time comes and we are in such anxiety that we can’t sleep and so we meditate on the reason we’re angry and whole thing seems to get worse. That is why we don’t go to bed angry.
So, what do we do then, stay up all night and just try to forget it? If the one we’re angry at is our spouse or a brother or sister and that person has already tuned us out and gone to sleep we just angrier. And if it’s a friend or co-worker then there’s nothing we can do until we see them again. So what do we do?
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath.” ... Eph. 4:6
The anger that we experience at times like this is an emotion that springs up inside us, and is usually caused from frustration because we can’t do anything to change the situation and the person we’re angry with doesn’t seem to care. This emotion is something that we alone have to deal with, and once that emotion is back under control we’ll see things more clearly and deal with the problem properly.
What we need to do is get into our quiet place and talk to God about it like a child would speak to his father. We need to pour it all out and not hold back a thing because He wants to help and He wants us to get that anger and frustration out of us.
“Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.” … 1 Peter 5:7
We need to tell Him everything and then ask for His help and His guidance and His love and His patience and His wisdom so that we can deal with the person and resolve the conflicting issue. We need to pray for the person we’re angry with, as well, and ask that the Lord would touch their heart and mind so they’ll be willing to resolve the issue amiably.
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
If we approach the issue with our own wisdom and understanding, and with our own pre-set opinions, we will just add more fuel to the already raging fire. When the anger burns inside us alone – because it appears that it’s not bothering the person we’re angry with – then the problem of anger is really ours and we have to deal with it.
So when we give the problem to God and talk it out with Him for five minutes or five hours – whatever it takes – then what we are doing is getting the anger out of us and getting our emotions back under control. But as well, we will no longer carry the burden of the problem because we will have given it to God.
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” Luke 1:37
We have to trust God and believe that He can and that He will intervene for us.
“The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” … Psalm 18:2
Afterwards, we’ll have God’s peace about us and we’ll be able to go to bed and sleep like a baby because the anger that we had earlier will be gone. And we’ll rest because we know that God has taken the burden and is working on our behalf.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” … John 14:27
And when we rise in the morning our soul will be at rest and God’s peace will be about us so we’ll be able to deal with the situation clearly. The other party might not be ready to settle, but our heart will be settled and our eyes and our hope will be focused on Jesus. We will have the confidence in Him to know that He will lead and guide us according to His will.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” … Proverbs 3:5-6
